antivirus is just a security program that is installed on a computer or mobile device to protect it from infections malware .
The term “malware” refers to any malicious or malicious software whose purpose is to infiltrate or damage a computer system or information without the consent of its owner

This type of software includes:.

  • Virus : its function is to alter the normal functioning of the computer without the permission or knowledge of the user. Usually, they replace executable by others infected with the code of this file
  • Trojans (Trojans) . It is presented to the user as a seemingly legitimate and harmless program, but at run , gives an attacker remote access to the infected computer
  • Worms (IWorm) :. has the ability to replicate themselves. They spread from computer to computer, but unlike a virus, has the ability to spread without the help of a person
  • Keyloggers :. Is responsible for registering the pulses that perform on the keyboard, for later memorizing in a file or send them via Internet
  • Botnets . refers to a group or network of software robots, or bots, that run autonomously and automatically. The creator of the botnet can control all computers / servers remotely infected

How does an antivirus

Basically, there are two ways that an antivirus software identifies the malware:

  • Detection signatures and
  • behavior detection .

The signature detection functions as the system Immune.
It scans your computer for characteristics or “signatures” identifiable malicious programs.

This makes use of a dictionary of known malware, if there is something on the computer that matches a pattern the dictionary, the program tries to neutralize it.

Like the human immune system, the dictionary approach requires updates (such as flu shots) to protect against new strains of malware. A virus can only protect what it recognizes as harmful.

The problem is that cyber attackers are developing new malware so quickly that antivirus developers can not keep up.

The behavior detection , the antivirus tries to identify known malware but monitors the behavior of software installed on your computer.

When a program acting suspiciously, as if trying to access a protected file or modify another program, the behavior-based antivirus software noted suspicious activity and warns you of this.

This approach provides protection against new types of malware that do not exist in dictionaries .

The problem with this approach is that it can generate false warnings. You as a user can feel unsure about what to allow or disallow and eventually become insensitive to all these warnings.

You may be tempted to click “OK” in each message leaving your computer open to attack or infection.
In addition, at the time that the behavior is detected, the malware is executed probably already on your machine and you could ignore what actions did before the antivirus software to identify him.

How to protect against “malware”?

  • Install proper antivirus and a firewall.
  • Use strong passwords: It is recommended that passwords do not contain full names, real names or your company as well as well-known numbers (telephone number or date of birth)

  • Keep updated the operating system and Web browser of your computer
  • Use the “common sense”.. use caution when running software from Internet or peripherals such as CD or USB memories. Do not open pages or emails from unknown or dubious origins.
